American Medical Association President calls on physicians to help turn the tide of the opioid epidemic

March 3rd, 2016

To battle the opioid epidemic, a task force comprised of more than 20 state and specialty medical associations, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Dental Association has been convened to identify best practices and implement them across the country. American Medical Association President, Steven J. Stack, MD, outlines five specific steps individual providers must take.

  1. Register for and use state’s prescription drug monitoring.
  2. Enhance education and training about safe prescribing.
  3. Co-prescribe naloxone to patients at risk of overdose.
  4. Get training to provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders.
  5. Speak out against stigma and stand up for what is right.
